It’s that time of year. We’re all overbooked with parties, lots of events around food and in a time crunch to prepare for the holidays. We push our fitness goals and healthy eating habits aside and justify this decision by thinking we will start in the new year to make those healthy choices.
This is the mentality that gets one’s health in trouble.
Why do we wait for the New Year to have a clean slate and start new? That gives us ONE CHANCE in 365 days to have a clean slate and get it right…wow that’s a lot of pressure. And let’s face it, we’re human, we’re going to stumble, we’re going to make a mistake, we’re going to make some poor decisions. Should we wait until the following year to start new again?
Every day is a new day. Every morning is a chance to make a healthy decision. If your goal is to start exercising 3 times a week for the new year. What good does it do to push off your goals and wait until January 1st? Once you’ve made a decision, go after it! You’re starting to create habits, you’re starting your goals, and by the time New Year’s comes around, you’re already in progress, you’ve made some mistakes and learned from them, you’re ahead of the game.
If a child wants to get better at soccer, would you say, “Nope, don’t start working on those soccer drills until the season starts and you have a clean plate with the new season.” I’ve never heard a parent say that. I’ve heard encouragement and getting that child to start those drills now, work on toe touches, passes and running. You encourage that child to start now, because by the time soccer season starts, the child has already progressed.
If you’re truly dedicated to making health and fitness part of your lifestyle, it doesn’t start in January, it starts every morning by starting new, getting focused, and making good decisions.
