We’re approaching recital time. That time when among other things in life, the dance world is hectic. There’s rehearsals, practice, perfecting moves, remembering the details in the choreography, getting organized with our costumes, hair, and makeup. Other life things such as graduations, final exams and work duties are still top of mind while we’re simultaneously working towards being the best dancers we know how to be.
It’s nerve wracking. We’ve spent hours in the studio working on our technique and routines. We want it to be perfect. We have to perform in front of hundreds of people. We’re trying to impress loved ones, our teachers and even strangers whom we desire to connect with. All the hours of training boils down into a few minutes - these few moments of time that no matter what happens, you cannot take back.
A lot of us strive for perfection. We have to make it perfect, right? Here’s the problem, “perfect” doesn’t exist. When we seek perfection it allows FEAR of being imperfect creep in. Not only does it start to creep in, but it grows more rapidly and more powerful with time. The more we yearn for perfection, the more we’re fostering the fear of failure.
So this year, while we’re on stage let’s keep a few things in mind.
Forget Perfection - Be Fierce!
Being fierce means practicing self compassion; which also fosters being compassionate towards others
Being fierce means practicing self confidence, loving who you are, and not apologizing for what the world wants you to be
Being fierce means letting go of control and surrendering to the moment
Being fierce means not letting fear get in the way and staying focused on what you want to accomplish
Being fierce is not giving up during times of struggle
Being fierce means finding solutions rather than focusing on the problems
